What is the Keto Diet?

In order to understand the health benefits, it’s important to first understand what the keto diet is. The ketogenic or keto diet is a diet that is low-carb and high in healthy fats. It’s similar to the Atkins diet (created by Dr. Robert Atkins many years ago). By replacing a lot of your carb intake with fat intake, your body is put into a metabolic state called “ketosis,” which allows your body to efficiently burn and use fat for energy. While the diet has been connected with health benefits against diseases like diabetes and cancer, it does also drastically affect blood sugar and insulin levels, so it might not be for everyone. (Note: It’s best to check with your doctor or medical professional before trying a new diet.)

What Are The Macros For a Keto Diet?

The standard keto diet follows this macronutrient profile:

  • 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and 5 percent carbs

However, there are sometimes slight variations in macro percentages depending on a person and his or her goals. Some involve cycling high carb days, or higher protein percentages daily.

Benefits of the Keto Diet

As we mentioned above, the keto diet has been shown to lower risk of certain diseases, but most people turn to keto because of its weight-loss benefits. Many studies have found that a ketogenic diet can be an effective way to lose weight, and lower the risk of weight-related diseases
