Octane Fitness Ellipticals Buying Guide
Octane Fitness was founded in 2001 by two Minnesota men with longtime experience in the fitness industry. Their stated mission was to produce “superior elliptical cross trainers that customers love and use to fuel their lives.” Mission accomplished! Octane went on to invent the first recumbent elliptical, combine ellipticals with strength training, devise a zero-impact treadmill alternative, and create the world’s only lateral elliptical.
Today the company makes 12 cardio trainer models. Included are standing ellipticals, recumbent ellipticals, a lateral elliptical and Zero Runners. Here are summaries of some favorite buys.
Lowest Priced Standing Octane Elliptical: Q35
At $2,199 the Q35 is the most affordable elliptical in Octane’s Standing Series. This total body trainer has the same club-quality performance of pricier options but a simpler console with fewer preset programs. Key points are ergonomic pedaling with a 20.5″ path, above average training for the upper body, four workout programs with calorie and distance goals, and Workout Boosters that can be layered over the programs. (These are called ArmBlaster, GluteKicker and X-Mode.) Overall the Octane Q35 can efficiently help you manage your weight, build strength, tone your whole body and exercise your heart. It’s available from OctaneFitness.com with a confident five-year parts warranty.
Premier Standing Octane Elliptical: Q47
The Q47 is Octane’s top Standing Series elliptical trainer. It features an ergonomic elliptical path with range of 18 to 26 inches, so it supports natural walking strides and allows for lots of variation to target different muscles in the lower body. The upper body motion is smartly designed too, burning nearly twice the calories that a competitor could. In terms of size and resistance this fitness machine can accommodate almost any teen or adult. It also protects small kids with a lock-out “MOM Mode.”
Valuable training support is programmed into the console and much more is available through the elliptical’s wireless connection to SmartLink. One option with SmartLink is specifying which muscles you’d like to work on and then getting a tailored workout suggestion. You can also work toward your goals with help from customized 30-day, 60-day and 90-day exercise plans.
This Octane elliptical is sold with a choice of two consoles. One console includes extra electronics plus resistance bands that you can attach to the machine for cross training with stretches and strength exercises. Depending on the console selection the Q47 sells for $4,599 or $5,099. For a limited time it’s being shipped with an iPod Mini to use as a SmartLink workout monitor or for entertainment during workouts.
Best Recumbent Octane Elliptical: XR6
The $3,499 XR6 is Octane’s premier recumbent elliptical trainer. Compared with other recumbent exercise bikes the XR6 lets riders benefit from about 350% more glute activity! That’s according to a university study. The study also found that people burn 23% more calories on the Octane XR6 than when recumbent bike riding.
Some other advantages to using the XR6 elliptical are multigrip handlebars for varied upper body training, a wireless connection to SmarkLink for new workouts and data tracking, and built-in Workout Boosters that add muscle-specific training to standard elliptical workouts.
The Octane XR6 is based on a health club model and is sold with a competitive home use warranty.
Octane’s Lateral Elliptical: LX8000
Add variety to cardio training with the world’s only Lateral Elliptical! Octane’s LateralX LX8000 trains the body like no other machine can. It combines a vertical stepping motion with side-to-side movement that challenges lower body and core muscles in a new way, plus upper body motion is supported with resistant handlebars. Researchers have found that compared with people using traditional elliptical trainers, LateralX users train their thighs 30% more and burn about 30% more calories.
This commercial grade elliptical is available with a standard LED or a touch screen, which can both be powered by user activity. The base price for the Octane Lateral Elliptical is $6,999.
Zero Runners
Run with zero harsh impact! It seems impossible within Earth’s atmosphere, but you can do it with an Octane Zero Runner. Zero Runners suspend the user’s entire body to allow vigorous cardio training with zero impact. These fitness machines have very long adjustable strides — up to 58″ — and work as alternatives to treadmills and elliptical trainers for all fitness levels. Smartly designed arm bars are included too; they let you swing your arms in a natural way and are more effective than those on typical elliptical trainers. Zero Runners are an ideal supplement to serious runners’ outdoor training and can ultimately help people run faster than before.
For a limited time OctaneFitness.com is shipping both Zero Runner models — the ZR7 and ZR8 — with free iPod Minis to enhance workout time. These are priced at $3,299 and $4,299, respectively.
