Best Exercise Bikes by Type

This chart shows some of the best exercise bikes from three popular brands: NordicTrack, ProForm and Sole. How do these fitness brands compare with each other? Here are some trends evident in our exercise bike reviews:

  • NordicTrack and ProForm exercise bikes are most popular among shoppers interested in "bells and whistles" -- features that aren't essential but make exercise more engaging. All of the upright and recumbent bikes from this brand have iPod-compatible sound systems and many built-in workout programs. Many exercise bikes and other cardio trainers from these two brands also have full-color touchscreens, Android web browsers, access to high definition video workout downloads, and other electronic perks. NordicTrack and ProForm have the same parent company and their exercise bikes have some of the same electronics and mechanical components. In general NordicTrack has a better reputation for quality control.

  • Sole Fitness caters to shoppers who are primarily interested in high quality basics. Originally this brand made fitness equipment exclusively for light commercial settings. Sole exercise bikes have iPod-compatible sound systems and some preset workouts, but that's the extent of Sole's focus on electronics for entertainment and training support. The trade-off is that Sole exercise bikes tend to have heavy flywheels and be low maintenance. This brand has an excellent reputation for customer service.

Low Impact Cardio Machines

Of all the exercise bike types, recumbent bikes are the gentlest on your knees, ankles and back. Not sure if you want a recumbent exercise bike, but like the idea of ultra-low joint impact with your cardio exercise? Consider choosing an elliptical trainer, a TreadClimber or a Max Trainer. These fitness machines are all great options for burning lots of calories without the joint pain that's sometimes associated with cardiovascular exercise.
