ProForm X-Bike Review

Quick Summary

The ProForm X-Bike is an ultra-compact home exercise bike that folds for storage. Pedal tension is controlled with a dial located near the handlebars. Unlike most ProForm bikes this model has a minimalist design; you won’t get a touchscreen monitor, music speakers, iFit Coach or other high-tech perks. Still, the X-Bike gives workout feedback and has space for a mobile device or magazine to encourage longer workouts. The ProForm X-Bike sells for just $149 online including delivery.

Our Rating

Rating: 70/100.  The ProForm X-Bike is an upright exercise bike with a small foldable frame to help keep your home clutter-free. At just $149 it’s one of the cheapest exercise bikes on the market. The X-Bike is the simpler model in a series that also features the X-Bike Duo ($249), which converts from an upright bike to a recumbent bike.

The ProForm X-Bike gives a choice of eight resistance levels, so you can warm up with easy pedaling and then increase the intensity as you ride. Maximum tension on the X-Bike is relatively light, however. Heavier resistance would add significantly to the bike’s cost.

For safety during high-speed workouts the pedals have shoe straps attached.

A small data screen shows your speed, mileage, calorie burn and time elapsed. The monitor is battery-powered. You can ride the bike without the monitor if you wish, and the bike doesn’t need to be plugged in to work. Unlike the X-Bike Duo monitor, the basic X-Bike monitor doesn’t include built-in workout programs nor a connection to iFit Coach for immersive personal training… so you might want to park the bike in front of a TV to pass the time. The console does have room for your mobile device or a magazine though.

ProForm X-Bikes need minimal floor space as you ride. After workouts an X-Bike can easily be moved to the side: Just hold the handlebars while standing at the front of the bike, tilt the whole unit, and let the bike’s caster wheels help you with transport. This trainer isn’t very heavy and has a user weight limit of 250 pounds.

A factory-direct warranty (included) provides parts replacement and labor for 90 days. Like all ProForm fitness machines, the X-Bike is also sold with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Pros:

  • Low price ($149 including delivery)
  • Easy to assemble
  • Small frame needs little floor space
  • Folds for storage
  • Has wheels to assist with repositioning
  • 8 resistance levels
  • Ledge for smartphone or tablet computer
  • Adjustable seat height to fit different riders
  • Pedal straps for safety

Cons:

  • Light resistance compared with more expensive exercise bikes
  • Not for very long-legged people
  • No workout programs
  • No heart rate monitor
  • Very limited warranty
  • Requires occasional light maintenance (tightening the bolts)

Conclusion

ProForm’s X-Bike is one of the cheapest bikes on our review site in terms of cost and quality. Even so, it can be a satisfying “starter exercise bike” or a useful rainy-day alternative to outdoor exercise.

For better value among discount exercise bikes we recommend the ProForm X-Bike Duo, which has many upgrades and sells for just $249.
