Treadmills with iFit Buying Guide

iFit Coach is the top-rated app for personal training. It works treadmills in three different ways:

  1. iFit Coach enabled treadmills: Enabled treadmills have the app built-in. They show iFit workouts and other features on their touch screens, which are up to 22 inches wide.
  2. iFit Coach ready treadmills: These cardio trainers can connect to iFit Coach via Bluetooth. They use external displays such as smartphones, tablets, and TVs.
  3. iFit compatible treadmills: These older fitness machines can be upgraded with iFit Coach consoles.

So what’s the big deal with iFit Coach? The service delivers tailored personal training to anywhere that has WiFi access. iFit workout programs can automate your treadmill’s speed and incline for personalized training sessions. The app can also track your health activity both on and off the treadmill. Like a true coach, it has tailored suggestions about workouts, nutrition, and even your sleep schedule. The app provides all of the benefits of a personal trainer without having to interact with an actual person!

Which iFit Treadmill Is Best For You?

Six fitness brands sell treadmills with iFit. These are sister brands (the parent company is ICON) and they share similarities across their features and customer service. NordicTrack and ProForm have the widest selections of treadmills with iFit. The other options are FreeMotion Fitness, HealthRider, Reebok Fitness, and Smooth Fitness. Prices have a wide range. Here are the general benefits of choosing an advanced iFit treadmill versus a cheaper iFit treadmill.

Performance: Track Size and Speed

Choosing a home treadmill, first decide whether you want a treadmill for walking or a treadmill for running. Treadmills for walkers have shorter tracks and lower maximum speeds. All else being equal, they cost less.

Here are standards for home treadmills today, plus two exceptions:

Type of Treadmill ExerciseTrack LengthTop Speed
Walking55 inches10 mph
Walking, jogging, running60 inches12 mph

Going beyond the standards, iFit treadmills for marathon trainers and other serious runners have even higher top speeds. They also provide extra track length to suit runners with longer strides.

Another important exception is iFit incline trainers. Incline trainers have low maximum speeds (e.g., 4.0 mph), but their extra-steep inclines can support your success. Walking at low speeds on a steep incline, you can burn calories quite quickly. Standard treadmills have inclines too.

Performance: Incline

Incline is the most exciting part of treadmill performance. Incline training lets you sculpt your muscles from different workout angles, plus it can dramatically boost your metabolism. And of course, incline training makes treadmill exercise more akin to crossing terrain. With iFit Coach workouts, immersive scenic views will match your treadmill’s incline for a virtual globetrotting exercise experience.

Even cheap treadmills with iFit have up to 10 percent inclines. The best iFit treadmills in our reviews have maximum 20 percent inclines and iFit incline trainers can tilt to 30 percent and 40 percent.

Electronics: iFit Display Screens

Interactive views are a key to iFit’s popularity. The most engaging workouts are filmed in HD video and transport you to famous outdoor paths. You can also virtually explore the world as you exercise with iFit Google Maps workouts. These have satellite views and Google Street Views, plus you can see each route’s elevation.

Of course the bigger your screen, the more immersive the workouts. You can save money by choosing an iFit Coach ready treadmill, which lets you add your own screen. Add a display of any size: Use your smartphone, tablet computer, standard computer or TV. The other option is an iFit Coach enabled treadmill. These have web-enabled video screens included. Screen widths from NordicTrack this year range from 7 inches to 22 inches.

Durability

Durability tends to improve with treadmill price. Higher-priced treadmills usually last longer and need less maintenance to perform their best. They also tend to have higher user weight capacities.

To help you understand treadmill durability, our treadmill reviews include part-by-part descriptions of the fitness machines. For example, we let you know if a treadmill exercise belt is made of one-ply material or if it’s thicker. A thicker belt will last longer and could be maintenance-free. A thinner belt is more prone to require regular recalibration and lubrication (plus it could wear out rather quickly). You can always install a new belt, but the best treadmills with iFit save you the hassle.

Warranties are usually great indicators of durability. In particular, check the parts warranty to get a sense of how long the treadmill should perform well with minimal maintenance.

Summary of Treadmills with iFit Coach

iFit Coach treadmills can all work with basic iFit graph workouts, interactive Google Maps workouts, and HD video workouts. With their built-in screens or external displays, they can also show workout statistics, your nutrition journal, iFit community message boards, and other useful features. Generally as treadmill prices increase the benefits are higher performance, more advanced on-board electronics, and better durability. Five of the best treadmills with iFit Coach are featured on the chart above.
