Mio Alpha vs. Alpha 2 Sports Watches

The Alpha series is Mio’s entrance into the sports smartwatch industry. Not to be confused with a traditional smartwatch, the Alphas are geared towards workouts and runs. Currently, there are two Alpha models available for sale. The Alpha and the Alpha 2.

We’ll compare these original and successor models to each other to see which one might catch your eye compared to the other. We’ll be looking at the designs and overall features and what options those give you.See Best Price

Design

The two Alphas are nearly identical to each other save for some band and exterior aesthetic changes to the Alpha 2. The bands are still thick which is a common theme through Mio products. The readout is all digital, so it lacks the classic look of two-handed watches. Then again, this is a sports watch that you would be more comfortable taking to the gym than a fancier watch.

In essence, its a throwback to the classic design of early digital watches, especially when you choose the gold trim color.

Features

With the Alphas charged and strapped to your wrist, you’re just about ready to get that heart rate up. Before you head out, let’s make sure that you’ve gone over the various stats that the Alphas record.

What both watches have:

  • HR monitoring (no chest strap needed)
  • steps
  • calories
  • pace
  • goal setting
  • customizable display
  • compatibility with the Mio GO and PAI apps

What the Alpha 2 has vs. the Alpha:

One of the biggest differences between the two watches is that the Alpha 2 is waterproof up to 30m. For swimmers, this is a game changer. Normally they’d have to rely on fitness trackers alone to be waterproof, but now the Alpha 2 wraps everything into one watch.

It wouldn’t be a good idea to try and test the active floor of 30m, so that’s why we envision lap swimming as a strong metric for the Alpha 2.

The Alpha 2 has a slight edge in battery life when not using the activity haps or monitoring one’s heart rate. The difference in battery life between the two watches overall isn’t too big, but still a noticeable improvement from the Alpha to the Alpha 2.See Best Price

Overall

With not too much difference between the Alpha series models, we can safely assure you that either model would a great budget purchase for you. You’re going to get people who are critical of the watches’ tracking systems and its ability to monitor things with extreme accuracy.

The truth is that you will never be able to get 100% accuracy even with the more premier sports watches. The reason why the Alpha series is so popular is that it contains a lot of core metrics like Fitbit, Garmin, and Samsung but without the triple digit price figure.

Now, this definitely doesn’t mean that every Mio Alpha or Alpha 2 is going to come with faulty technology. While some things you won’t be able to control, you can always maintain and clean it and keep it out of harm’s way.
