Body Beast is a Beachbody home fitness plan focused on strength training for men and women. Beachbody advertises that you can go from “Average Joe to JACKED” and from “Ho-hum to HOTTIE” over the 90-day course with the help of award-winning bodybuilder Sagi Kalev who leads the course. If you opt for the DVD option, the Base Kit is centered around 12 video workouts that are shipped on four DVDs. Meal guides are included with both options to help keep you fueled and able to recover quickly from exercise.

As with any program, results vary, but overall you can expect significant weight loss, total body strengthening, and all-over tightening when you complete one Body Beast workout per day, six days per week.

The most dramatic Body Beast results are seen in people who are relatively new to serious strength training. As you quickly gain muscle you’ll burn more fat than before (even as you sleep!) because your resting metabolic rate will rise. But if you’ve already been at it for almost a year, Body Beast might not help you break past a plateau.

The Body Beast DVD Base Kit currently costs about $50 including shipping and handling ($49.85 to be exact).

Pros:

  • Dramatic results: Training six days a week with Body Beast videos, science says that beginners can get dramatic results in terms of weight loss and strength gain. Keep in mind though that Body Beast before-and-after pictures might show the effects of two or three rounds of the program (not just 90 days).
  • An introduction to weightlifting: The name “Body Beast” is meant to be intimidating, but really the program is an introduction to strength training with free weights; you aren’t expected to be an advanced “beast” when you begin.
  • Supports a lean or bulked-up goal: Many exercisers, women in particular, are concerned that with weightlifting they’ll become bulkier than intended. The Body Beast program explains how you can use different exercise videos with a specific nutrition plan to get your desired effect.
  • Watch online or on DVD: You can buy the Body Beast Base Kit on a 12-DVD set or sign up to Beachbody’s digital fitness service, Beachbody On Demand, which will give you unlimited access to Body Beast videos and hundreds of others. New customers get 14 days to try Beachbody On Demand for free.

Cons:

  • The beastly grunt: In the best personal training scenarios, you like the personal trainer’s workouts AND their style. A small percentage of Body Beast customer reviews mention disliking Sagi Kalev’s “beastly” grunts during lifts. Others aren’t bothered or even think the exaggerated grunts are amusing.
  • Few women are included: Unlike most other Beachbody fitness series, Body Beast mostly has men in its videos. This could be discouraging to women who’d like to see female role models or demonstrators for most of the exercises.
  • Not for advanced users: If you’ve been strength training for a while, you might think Body Beast isn’t an adequate challenge. The exercises are standard so you probably won’t learn a lot either.
  • DVD troubles: If opt for the DVD option, keep in mind that the main complaint in customer reviews of Body Beast is that sometimes the DVDs fail to play. It’s a good idea to try playing them all right away to make sure they work.

Body Beast Full Review

Body Beast is a three-month home exercise series focused on strengthening the body. It can support either lean muscle mass or bulking up, and in both cases a side benefit is fat loss. The twelve main Body Beast workouts primarily use weight lifting or resistance exercises, and they’re led by personal trainer Sagi Kalev for Beachbody. Each month of the program is a distinct Training Block with its own workout focus and diet recommendations.

How it Works

Depending on whether you choose the DVD or streaming option, you can watch the 12 Body Beast workout videos either on DVD at home, or stream them on TV, computer or mobile either at home or on the go at the gym. You will exercise six days/week for 12 weeks.

A booklet that arrives with the DVDs or in the program materials section online explains how to set a video workout schedule to support your fitness goals. Another guide explains how eating foods (and supplements) with specific nutrient proportions can help fuel your workouts and speed up your recovery time. For personalized advice you can contact other program users and Beachbody fitness experts at an exclusive online forum.

Most of the videos require the use of resistance bands or dumbbells and other simple home gym equipment as listed below.

Body Beast Workouts

The Body Beast home workout program arrives with a calendar and instructions for personalizing your workout schedule. An example of personalization is including more cardio video use for extra weight loss. Each month you’ll mostly use a particular type of workout: Build, Beast or Bulk.

The 12 main Body Beast workout videos are:

  1. Build: Chest/Tris
  2. Build: Shoulders
  3. Build: Legs
  4. Build: Back/Bis
  5. Bulk: Chest
  6. Bulk: Back
  7. Bulk: Legs
  8. Bulk: Shoulders
  9. Bulk: Arms
  10. Beast: Abs
  11. Beast: Cardio
  12. Beast: Total Body

What equipment is needed for Body Beast workouts?

  • Dumbbells (or resistance bands of different strengths)
  • Incline workout bench (or stability ball)
  • Chin-up bar (or resistance bands with door attachment)
  • Advanced chin-up bar (optional)
  • Curl bar (optional)
  • Shock-absorbent mat for jumping (optional)

Body Beast Pricing

The Body Beast Base Kit DVD set sells for $49.95 on Amazon (including shipping).

Conclusion

Body Beast is best for men and women who are relative newcomers to weight training. Beginners can get great results just from the strength training videos, and users report that adding Beachbody’s dietary supplements (or other vitamins) with this program makes a visible difference. You can expect to shed pounds while becoming much firmer and stronger.

Tip: Before you buy this DVD workout series or any other, watch a preview video to virtually meet the personal trainer.

I am 51 and love Body Beast. I have started my second round as I write this. I have done P90x, non beach body workout dvds, I will only mention these if you want me to. I don't mind Sagi' s grunts and in suits, they're all done with humour, then again I used train in a hard-core bodybuilding gym back in my younger days. I think you need to do this and any other workout dvds, two or three times to see some significant difference.

I did Hammer and chisel and enjoyed that. But It took a little bit to warm up to the beast. Being an older women but I am in it For my success and compete against myself. He knows what he is doing. I googled the beast and he is so cute in his little hat and his life philosophy is in line with mine..I love Autumn and have worked out with her for two years + and lost 110 pounds with her, but wanted to shake it up and the beast was the perfect workout for me. I cut most of his weights in half because I am a women and I enjoy his encouragement every morning by the way I am 66 and if I can do it so can you.

I've recently started Beast over the last 4 weeks and I'm really enjoying it. I'm very experienced weight lifter, but have gotten stale doing the same routine for years. My biggest issue is not having all the equipment I need at home (I could use a few more various weights of dumbells). But otherwise I've been impressed with it. I'll keep in mind the Hammer and Chisel program for after I get through the 90 days of Beast.

I've used the Beast workout for about 2 years. I like routine, and found the "bulk" workout to be something I can keep up with consistently. I've I miss a couple of days, I just pick up where I left off. I've been very happy and recommended the program to others. I ripped the DVD's onto a USB drive that plugs into my home gym TV, so it's super convenient. My wife is now looking for at-home alternatives to her gym, but doesn't like Sagi Kalev's personality and macho approach. I'd be very interested in a female version of the Beast series led by a bodybuilder or fitness model!

Hi, Have you tried the Masters Hammer and Chisel series. It includes more of a comprehensive combination of 21 Day fix and Body Beast with a great balance for both men and women. I'm in the middle of this program and find it's a great balance between Sagi and Autumn's approach to fitness while getting in a great workout in. The sessions are not as long as P90x and offer a range of movements. Everyday is almost a different workout for a solid two weeks so you don't get bored, which was a plus for me as to why I swapped out from P90x (which is an amazing program but can only tolerate the same jokes daily but will eventually get back to it!).
  • DJ February 4, 2020 at 11:32 pm
    how long are the workouts?
    • KG May 28, 2020 at 6:05 am
Anywhere from 29-53 minutes, the shortest being the ab workout for 11 minutes. the longer sessions do go buy quickly because of the supersets and giant sets which are well worth it for the back/bis, chest/tris and you don't really notice the time going by. My weakest points are leg days and can really feel them burn.

How much weight in dumbells do you need?I would have to buy some.
    • FitRated January 15, 2020 at 10:25 am
Hi Jerry, the weight of the dumbbells is totally up to you! We suggest you get adjustable dumbbells so you can change the weight as you make progress in your strength training.

I bought the program about two years ago however I was wondering if there was a way to download the program on my phone. My number is 575-770-4249. Thank you. James Branch

Hi James, unfortunately at this time Body Beast is only available in dvd format. You could always make notes of the workouts to take on the go if you wanted to use the program on your own. This would be the best way to take this workout on the go until it is offered in an app program.
    • Catherine Grove July 4, 2019 at 1:19 pm from Utah
They are available online through Beachbody on Demand. $99 for 12 months access to all the videos from all the programs.
  • Dave February 16, 2019 at 10:41 am from Maryland
Found this review to be very informative, straight up and what I needed to know as I am new to weight lifting. Looking to lean up, not bulk up. You gave me the insight I wanted with this program so I know have a better understand of what to expect and what not to expect. Good program for me. Thank You
