ProForm Exercise Bikes Buying Guide

In the market for a new exercise bike? You’ve probably already noticed that different brands prioritize different features and specs. ProForm, for example, places emphasis on entertainment and workout guidance. Entertainment perks include everything from smartphone-compatible speakers to touchscreen consoles depending on the model. Workout guidance on a ProForm trainer typically includes an extensive menu of preset workouts, as well as access to iFit technology for an endless supply of new workouts on demand.

Sometimes ProForm will pair its advanced electronics with lower quality components, and much like with other brands, not all their exercise bikes are created equal. Here we are going to take a look at the best value ProForm exercise bikes in a handful of categories—upright bikes, recumbent bikes, recumbent hybrid trainers, and indoor cycles (including their unique Tour De France models).

There’s no question that exercise bikes bring value to the workout. With an average of 260 calories burned per 30-minute workout, they make for a rain-or-shine workout plan. Technology has made leaps and bounds by way of apps and related workout programs, with users now able to ride along with professional trainers all over the Earth. Not your old school bicycle for sure, today’s ProForm Exercise Bikes allow for terrific warm-ups, cool-downs, and exercise routines in their own right. Whether as part of a strength training program, weight loss, or just for fun, read below for more information on the latest updates in this line.

Best ProForm Upright Bike

ProForm 8.0 EX Bike

Though ProForm has trimmed back their offerings in the exercise bike category, their conventionally styled 8.0 EX is a very solid contender when it comes to value for dollar. A smart and easy to use console can link with iFit should you choose to add the additional monthly subscription, but on its own the bike includes 30 pre-programmed workouts that make the most of the $599 bike’s 25 resistance levels.

For added convenience, the console has built-in cooling fans, and a pair of 2-inch speakers to boost the sound output of your smartphone or tablet while pushing through your workout routine. The bike also has heart rate monitoring via its handlebar grips, and boasts one of the more comfortable seats in the category. If you’re looking for comfort and convenience on a budget, it’s hard to go wrong here.

Best ProForm Recumbent Bike

ProForm 440 ES Bike

Once again focusing on value, ProForm’s 440 ES Recumbent Bike offers plenty of features for its approachable $699 sticker price. Similarly to the upright 8.0 EX, its console carries cooling fans and built-in speakers, as well as 32 pre-programmed workouts to choose from. Its magnetic resistance system keeps the bike whisper quiet too, so whatever entertainment you choose while training doesn’t compete with noise from the machine itself.

Another key benefit of this machine is its adjustability and comfort. Its seating position can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically, and its seat back boasts ample lumbar support as well. If you’re struggling with limited mobility, the 440 ES has a step-through frame design as well.

Best ProForm Recumbent Hybrid

ProForm Hybrid Trainer Pro

ProForm’s top recumbent hybrid is called the Hybrid Trainer Pro. This full-body trainer works as both a recumbent bike and an elliptical machine with moving arm bars. Available for just $699 online, it offers low-impact exercise on a small budget. The Hybrid Trainer Pro now has 20 preset workouts and is iFit-enabled. Data are shown on an LCD, and a watts meter helps you easily stay on target for fitness goals. A tablet computer holder makes it convenient to use iFit or access your other apps during workouts.

FitRated.com recommends this bike-elliptical only to smaller shoppers because of its 17″ stride. This makes it most comfortable for adults under 5’3″. Also worth noting is the rather light 15-pound drive. The more you weigh, the less natural the biking exercise will feel. We prefer the specs on ellipticals by Sole Fitness.

ProForm Spin Bikes

ProForm TDF Pro Bike

ProForm teamed up with Tour de France organizers to develop a series of tour-inspired spin bikes or indoor cycle trainers years ago, and after several iterations the brand now offers two models—the TDF Bike and TDF Pro.

The features that carry across both bikes include:

  • SMR™ Silent Magnetic Resistance
  • Inertia-Enhanced Flywheel
  • iFit-ready
  •  Compatible with Bluetooth wireless chest straps (sold separately)
  • Ergonomic, padded seat
  • Two 3-pound dumbbells are included with both bikes
  • Adjustable saddle and handlebars
  • Pedals with toe cages and straps
  • Incline/decline
  • 24 preset tours of real-life bike routes
  • Built-in speakers

What are the differences between the two models?

  1. Display Consoles: While the TDF Bike uses a button-clad display for its controls, the TDF Pro features a 10″ high definition touchscreen.
  2. Incline and Decline: The TDF Bike operates in a range of -15/+15 degrees, whereas the TDF Pro is capable of -20/+20 degrees.
  3. iFit: The TDF Pro includes a 1-year membership to iFit, giving you a ton of interactive training options. The TDF Bike is enabled for iFit, however you must pay for a subscription to this from the get-go.
  4. Pedals: Both models have toe cages with adjustable toe straps, but the TDF Pro adds clip-in pedals to the mix too; they have toe straps on one side and clip-ins on the other.
  5. Fan: Out of the two models, only the TDF Pro has a CoolAire™ Fan to keep you cool during workouts.

ProForm Fitness Company Profile

ProForm’s roots date back to 1977 when three Utah State University business majors — Scott Watterson, Gary Stevenson and Brad Sorenson — formed the import company Weslo. Weslo imported a variety of raw materials and finished products from Asian countries. Most lucrative among these was wood-burning stoves, but sales were only seasonal. To gain summertime business the trio manufactured trampolines and marketed them with the brand name ProForm Fitness. Weslo and ProForm soon expanded to offer exercise bikes and then a wider selection of fitness products.

Weslo and ProForm have been affiliated with a few different parent companies since the ‘70s. The most recent move was in 1994 when Watterson, Stevenson and other executives teamed up with Bain Capital, an investment group co-founded by Mitt Romney. The group formed ICON Health & Fitness with headquarters in Logan, Utah.

Today ICON is the world’s largest designer, manufacturer and marketer of fitness equipment. It owns a variety of fitness equipment brands and ProForm is among the most affordable. Its mix of low to moderate prices and “bonus features” appeals to many, many shoppers. For the past 20 years ProForm has been an industry leader in terms of units sold.

ICON owns many manufacturing plants. Until late 2015 some of their products were produced in Utah. Currently all production is done overseas. Customer service is based in the US.

Observant shoppers notice overlap between ProForm and NordicTrack, which is another ICON brand. Some shared features of NordicTrack and ProForm exercise bikes include iFit-readiness and SMR™ Silent Magnetic Resistance.
