NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle: The Value Proposition

The NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle picks up where the S15i leaves off. A luxury ride equipped with a vibrant 22-inch, 360-degree swiveling screen built to view iFit workouts, it also brings 24 levels of Silent Magnetic Resistance to the home for $1,899, which includes a 30-Day iFit Family Membership valued at $39.

For those familiar with the S15i, consider this model as nearly identical aside from an additional eight inches of screen space and two extra levels of resistance. The S15i is part of a NordicTrack offering where the bike comes free when they purchase four years of the iFit workout app at at $39 per month, or $1,872, meaning it’s effectively now half the price of the S22i.

Recently, the MYX II Fitness Bike entered the category as a more affordable alternative at $1,399 (read the full review of the MYX II Fitness Bike here). We’d also suggest that the ProForm Studio Bike Pro at $1,299. It offers a good comparison/contrast with the NordicTrack bikes. In terms of value, the S22i does bring a solid 10-year warranty on the frame, two-year guarantee on parts, and one year on labor. Compared to other models these days, that’s very respectable, although everyone would love to see lifetime guarantees across the board. Built with comfort in mind, the 2022 model also features new Bluetooth headphone capability so riders can better interact with their live iFit training community or enjoy music. A solid, commercial steel frame with a maximum user weight of 350 pounds, the S22i is certainly at the upper-end of its category in terms of price, but it is bringing quality to the counter.

One of the most unique value-added benefits of the S22i is the fact that it features a -10% decline and 20% incline option which works in conjunction with the iFit program. This feature is augmented by an improved DC Incline/Decline motor and welded stabilizers. For an inside studio bike to offer incline and decline is rare enough, but for it to work with the trainer-controlled programming is quite an impressive feature. For serious riders seeking the hills and hollers of road bikes, this in and of itself may make the decision for them.

Bike Build Quality

NordicTrack brings a reputation for solid machinery, and in the case of the S22i, that appears to be the case once more. The maximum user weight of 350 pounds and commercial steel construction serve as good indicators of overall durability. A 22-inch Smart HD Touchscreen with tilting display and a full 360-degree rotation is also a big draw for the those seeking multiple uses of the bike. The tilt and rotation allow riders to hop off and perform floor work with the included three-pound dumbbells. Resistance is generated through Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR), and the 24 levels are digitally controlled. Magnetic resistance is rated as among the smoothest of styles on the market.

Although quipped with an improved ergonomic padded saddle, it’s a little uncomfortable, so you may want to purchase a seat cover, but this is pretty common in spin bikes. The seat can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally. The non-slip, multi-position handlebar has also been upgraded for the 2022 model and ensures riders of varying heights can use the bike. The AutoBreeze Workout Fan is a nice touch, as are the two 2-inch digitally amplified speakers. This model also features dual water bottle holders and is compatible with standard road bike pedals and seat. It’s also easy to move about the home gym by way of front-mounted transport wheels. With Bluetooth headphone and heart rate connectivity powered by twice the RAM as in previous models, tracking stats and staying entertained is made easy. The 2022 model includes two digitally-amplified speakers and hybrid SPD-plus-toe clips.

The Experience: Resistance and Ride

The 24 levels of digitally-controlled magnetic resistance is a big draw for many, but the real gem here is the bike’s incline/decline option. Not many bikes offer this feature, but the S22i sports a -10% decline and 20% incline, and this can be controlled remotely by the professional trainers of the iFit community. When participating in iFit classes of any kind, whether with live trainers or pre-programmed, the bike can auto-adjust accordingly. With this incline/decline function, riders get the real feel of mountains, trails, or hills. New Quiet Drive technology makes this function smooth irrespective of the degree of angling or intensity of the ride. All of this is managed easily with One Touch controls.

Unlike older friction resistance models, the magnetic resistance is quiet and smooth. The 22-inch screen’s ability to swivel and tilt combined with the adjustable seat and handlebars allow users of any height and weight up to 350 pounds to achieve an incredible workout every time.

NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Bike Vs. The Competition

In the battle of the indoor bikes, the S22i is certainly among the higher-priced models, although not by much with all things considered. At $1,899, the purchase price comes with a 30-day iFit Family Membership. The other NordicTrack model, the S15i, comes free with the purchase of a four-year iFit package. The bigger bike brings an additional eight inches of screen and two additional levels of resistance.

The ProForm Studio Bike Pro 22 would serve as a comparison/contrast here. Priced at $1,299, the bike also comes with a 30-day iFit program and, in many ways, would seem like the same bike. Both offer 24 levels of magnetic resistance and a 22-inch screen which swivels. One big difference is the ProForm bike does not offer the incline/decline function, and, instead of a 350-pound weight max, it offers 250 pounds. Both bikes even offer a set of three-pound dumbbells and the same warranty.

The MYX Fitness Bike is another lower priced alternative to the S22i (read the full review of the MYX Fitness Bike here). Priced at $1,399, the MYX II Fitness Bike brings its own proprietary workout app with more than 500 classes as opposed to the iFit community’s trainer-led workouts. The MYX II app is $29 per month compared with iFit at $39 after the trial membership is up. Equipped with a 21.5-inch screen which swivels, its weight max is also 350 pounds. The warranty offers less coverage with one-year as opposed to the NordicTrack family’s 10 years for frame, two years for parts, and one year for labor.

Pros:

  • 30-day iFit Family Membership for spin class videos and interactive workouts
  • 22-inch swivel touch screen with high definition
  • 24 digital Silent Magnetic Resistance levels
  • Bluetooth headphones and heart rate connectivity
  • Two 2-inch, digitally amplified speakers
  • Quiet magnetic flywheel system
  • DC Incline/Decline Motor for slope settings of -10 to 20 percent
  • Improved adjustable padded saddle with universal stem
  • Hybrid SPD+Toe Clips Pedals
  • Multi-grip handlebars
  • Set of three-pound dumbbells for upper-body exercise
  • Two water bottle holders
  • Auto-adjusting workout fan
  • 350-pound user weight capacity
  • Transport wheels

Cons:

  • Costs a lot more than the average home exercise bike
  • NordicTrack has a reputation for slow customer service
  • Handlebars can get sticky during intensive workouts
  • Seat is a little uncomfortable

Workout Programs

If you decide the iFit program isn’t for you after the trial, the bike can be used without the iFit membership in manual mode. Users can also park it in front of a smart television or use another app. That said, the iFit program offers a lot of excellent features.

With any NordicTrack cycle trainer, 24/7 personal training from the iFit Family Membership is a highlight. The iFit app is built into the NordicTrack S22i Studio Cycle and can be downloaded to iOS and Android devices. The mobile apps offer a host of benefits, effectively providing ‘round-the-clock health and fitness coaching. Upon waking each morning, you can check an estimate of calories burned while sleeping. The app also provides a calorie intake suggestion for the day and automatically calculates and logs calories burnt for walking, swimming, and other activities when paired with a wearable activity tracker.

The iFit program includes dozens of LiveCast spin class videos plus an unlimited number of virtual outdoor bike workouts with Google Maps street views. All iFit workout files, including the bike class videos, can control the S22i resistance and incline to support the workout goals. With HD resolution, the extra-wide display can help riders immerse in studio bike classes or take simulated vacations with scenic Google Maps footage.

The outdoor rides are excellent with iFit as you are riding behind a professional instructor in various locations around the world. The live-streamed rider/instructor advises on posture, cadence, and resistance and can adjust the bike’s controls remotely.

Fitness App Compatibility

On an exercise bike already fitted with an integrated screen and iFit streaming, there’s no need to start looking at workout apps that focus on training instruction of any sorts. That said, if you’re looking for more in-depth training metrics to complement your fitness journey, we have some options for you. The Strava App has become a go-to for cardio enthusiasts. Runners and cyclists alike will use the app for tracking rides and runs. This app is especially helpful if you also enjoy running outdoors (weather permitting), both because you can compile all of your workouts in one place and the community aspect will help outdoor runners find new and challenging routes that have been shared by other users.

Google Fit—the simple fitness tracking software that’s compatible with countless Android smartwatches—could also prove useful to you. Use it to track your cardio and other workouts (yoga, strength, HIIT, and others), and maintain an easy-to-digest record of your progress. While both Strava and Google Fit are free, Strava does gatekeep some of its “premium functionality” for paid subscribers.

Features

The most prominent feature of the S22i is the 22-inch swivel screen with full 360 degrees of rotation. We are considering this bike, but are hesitant to buy without trying first? We currently have a Tour de France Proform. It is oretty uncomfortable, wobbly and very hard to adjust. The ease of adjustability is a big factor for us, as there is a 1-foot difference between me and my husband! Can you tell me your experience with this?
    • FitRated December 16, 2020 at 2:27 pm
Hi Jill, this bike is quite easy to adjust. There are 2 knobs that you turn to loosen the seat to be adjusted vertically, forwards, and backwards. NordicTrack has an assembly video for this specific bike on their product page, so you can see the adjustment knobs in action. Hope this helps!

I was considering purchase of this bike, so, I called to ask some questions. I was on hold 2 hours before hanging up. I purchase another brand.
    • FitRated Editorial Team August 11, 2020 at 12:14 pm
Hey Ken, Sorry to hear about your experience. Quite a few fitness brands have been overwhelmed by the pandemic and are still struggling to keep up with consumer requests. Not making excuses for them, and we have called out NordicTrack's poor customer service in the past, but things have been challenging for several brands for the majority of 2020. We hope you found a bike that you're in love with!
  • craig white March 18, 2020 at 8:42 pm from Los Angeles
Hi there, I'm trying to figure out which bike is best for me. Peloton or Nordictrack S22i I think live classes and a leader board are cool because I'm competitive but I also get bored easy so I like that you can switch things up woth the S22i Any advice?
    • FitRated Editorial Team August 11, 2020 at 12:17 pm
Based on your comments, we'd lean towards the S22i. The Peloton is very much loved by its devout following, but it's likely that you'll appreciate the diversity of the S22i a bit more. In addition, we like the fact that you get a longer warranty on the NordicTrack, and that it has a power incline/decline function.

I have been trying to find this bike on display in a store somewhere, but have been unable to do so. My wife has great interest in it, but she is only 4'11" and does not always fit comfortably on a standard stationary bike. She rides a Giant Sedona XS frame size, but I cannot get anyone from NordicTrack to give me info about who has it on display for her to try. I'm told I should try Dicks Sporting Goods, but the ones in my area don't have them. So as much as we want to order one, and NordicTrack has a 30 day return policy, they also charge $250 shipping and a 10% restocking fee. So if she doesn't fit, I'm paying $450 just to see if she would fit on it. Solid products from what I've seen, but a fail on customer service in this instance.
    • FitRated Editorial Team August 11, 2020 at 12:24 pm
You're in a bit of a tough situation there, I understand. Unfortunately with stocking issues caused by the pandemic, retailers are having a hard time keeping exercise bikes back in stock. Given the cost of shipping these large pieces of equipment, I can understand any brand's position of not offering free shipping/returns. It's a bit different than ordering something that comes in a 2-foot square box from Amazon! That said, we hope you're able to find a bike that fits your wife comfortably. One suggestion comes to mind; the MYX Fitness bike has more adjustability than this or many other competitors with streaming training/display screens, which allows the handlebars to be moved back closer to the seat. If I were to hazard a guess, while the NordicTrack ergonomics might still suit her, the added adjustability of the MYX could be beneficial.

What city and state are you located in. I too wanted to try on for size and check out the features. Found Johnson Fitness stores have them on the floor to try on, and order when ready as there is a backlog
  • Howie Long December 11, 2019 at 10:48 am
After the first year, if I don't continue the iFit subscription, what do I have access to on the screen?
    • FitRated December 17, 2019 at 2:49 pm
Hi Howie, After the first year, you have the option to renew your subscription and the renewal price is $468. This is optional, but you lose all your iFit features if you do not renew. The machine will still work fine without iFit, and there are daily workouts that stay with the machine. You will also have manual mode available to you.
  • Ginger marquardt August 12, 2019 at 11:15 am
We purchased this bike so we can do the video bike rides — more interesting than just looking at TV when doing stationary biking. And one feature we were looking for was an automatic resistance adjustment. Luckily for us, the bike is working and we can use it. However, the preset resistance levels, even in the “beginner rides” are significantly too difficult for true beginners. We can and do change the resistance to match our current abilities, but then the automatic adjustments are cancelled. I wish there were a way to change the resistance and have the bike automatically adjust around the new set level. I’ve tried to contact nordictrack but they haven’t been helpful. And I can’t find anything in the manual. While the videos are interesting, the resistance issue is a definite disappointment.
  • Charles Shall April 23, 2019 at 12:20 pm from IN
Do not ever purchase this bike. Nordic track has the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. When we received our bike and paid for white glove delivery and assembly, the guys who delivered it put it together wrong. After we called customer service, we were on hold for over 45 minutes they tried to get us to fix it ourselves. Finally we got a tech to come out, but that took over a week. Instead of fixing it then we had to file a claim, and wait over 3 weeks for the tech to come out. Then the incline/decline stopped working. After the tech came out again, with another week of waiting the part was on back order. After all this we decided it was time for a refund. Again my wife called only to be on hold for over 45 mins again! This was at the beginning of April. It is April 22 today and the company Icon fitness still hasn't picked up the bike and I had to call them! My wife has called 3x this month, on hold over 30 mins at least on every call. This is an expensive product, Nordic track should back it up with great customer service. Instead it has left a very sour taste in my mouth and I'll never purchase another item from them.

Hi Charles, we are so sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with NordicTrack. We hope you will consider some of the other models on the market as there are many great brands that would better suit you.
  • Josh April 16, 2019 at 6:27 pm
While I much prefer going out for a bike ride in the great outdoors, sometimes, that just isn’t possible, for a variety of reasons. That’s why I picked up the NordicTrack S22i. I love the huge touchscreen, the interactive classes that I can do whenever I want, and the fact that the classes don’t stop at cycling. I can do loads of other workout routines, like cross training and yoga, whenever I want to do something that’s a little different and can challenge my body in new ways. A great feature: the screen tilts, so you can exercise off of the bike, too. It’s also worth mentioning that my entire family loves using this machine. And the fact that I can store multiple user profiles in it makes it possible for everyone to make the most of what this NordicTrack product has to offer. The more I use this machine, the more I notice my muscles strengthening and my stamina increasing. My only problem with it is that the seat can be a little uncomfortable. My kids don’t find it as comfortable as I do, so I bought a little cover for it, and they’re fine with it now.
    • Courtney Grafton April 18, 2019 at 9:59 am
Hi Josh, we are so happy to hear that you are enjoying the NordicTrack. It is a great machine!! Bike seats can definitely take some time to get used to but keep in mind they can be interchangeable if you end up deciding to go with a different seat for the bike in the long run. We hope you continue to love the programs!

Can you aggressively spin in the standing position withoutwobbling?
      • FitRated Editorial Team August 11, 2020 at 12:26 pm
Sorry for the delay here, Brad! Someone missed this previously. So long as the bike is on a flat and level surface, the S22i is designed for hard use. Getting up and out of the saddle is a non-issue on this bike.
  • Brianna April 16, 2019 at 6:27 pm
I’m the type of person who gets bored with traditional workouts really easily. So I figured a stationary bike that I could use at home, and that came with interactive features, might be a good way to motivate myself to get moving. That’s where the NordicTrack S22i came in. This machine is perfect for anyone like me. Just set it up with the iFit subscription so that you can get cycling classes and really neat scenery with Google Street View. What I really like most is the variety of workouts that I have whenever I get on this machine, so I can do something different every day and keep things interesting. Again, for someone who easily gets bored like I do with stationary bikes and other workout equipment, this is definitely a perk! I’ve used the machine a lot since I got it, but what I like most so far is the trail run option, as the bike will actually adjust automatically, which is another fun feature that you can’t get on other stationary bikes. Bottom line: if you’re tech savvy, if you want to stick with fun workouts that really challenge your body, and if you want to be able to exercise at home while still receiving guidance from trainers, this is the machine you’ve been searching for. At least, in my opinion.
    • Courtney Grafton April 18, 2019 at 10:00 am
Hi Brianna. We are thrilled to hear that you are loving the NordickTrack. It is definitely a great machine and we love hearing from happy customers. The new workout programs definitely add an exciting element to stationary riding. Keep up the great work!
