Exercise Bikes with Video Screen Buying Guide

Distractions, distractions, distractions. Among one of the most popular excuses for avoiding readily exercise is that people are just too busy. Plus, it’s not exactly like working out is an enjoyable or entertaining experience, right? Consequently, exercise equipment manufactures over the past several years have made it a priority to make trainers more personable and enjoyable. Among their achievements is the exercise bike with video screen.

In an ever-increasing multi-tasking world, exercise bikes with video screen allow you to exercise while A) using the video screen as a distraction or B) using the video screen as a supplement to your workout. While some trainers are equipped with built-in games and/or work with the iPod dock to display music info on the screen, the vast majority of exercise bikes with video screens are actually designed to provide vital exercise data. The readouts may include everything from your heart rate and time spent exercising to motivating messages and calories burned.

Exercise bikes with video screen simply make the workout experience more educational, thereby guarantying a more proficient fitness routine. While you may think exercise bikes with video screen are only reserved for top-end, expensive models LCD or LED display is actually becoming a pretty common spec on exercise equipment universally — exercise bikes included. In fact, many of the exercise bikes in the under $500 price range actually have a video screen. What does vary depending on price, however, is the size of the video screen as well as other details like what color provides the backlight (blue, green, etc), whether or not it’s hi-res and/or touchscreen.

Exercise bikes with video screen traditionally feature LCD or LED display. You may have heard the terms before, but what exactly do they mean and which one is better?

  • Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Are used in a wide range of applications, including computer monitors, television, instrument panels and aircraft cockpit displays. They are common in consumer devices because LCD is more energy efficient and offer safer disposal than CRTs. Its low electrical power consumption enables it to be used in battery-powered electronic equipment.
  • Light Emitting Diode (LED): Are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting, including everything from automobile lighting to consumer electronics to traffic signals.

Which one is better?

Well, it all depends on a variety of factors. You have probably heard of terms like LCD and LED first and foremost when flat screen TV’s made a huge splash on the home market. Some are plasma, some are LCD, some are LED. LED TV’s are usually more expensive, thus making them better, right? It’s true LED produces a higher picture quality in televisions (compared to LCD TV’s) because of the higher contrast ratios. The result is a clearer, more vibrant picture.

Purchasing an exercise bike with video screen and deciding between LCD and LED is not nearly as important as selecting a type of display for your 55-inch television. Both display versions look great on trainers, though if you have the option between LCD or LED you might as well buy the exercise bike with LED display. This is not to say that LCD vs. LED is one of the most important buying factors for your next exercise bike. Rather, it’s all about what the video screen is capable of displaying. Generally, most exercise bikes with video screen display similar data.

I have a friend who suffers from chronic osteoarthritis and has used an exercise bike in hospital with a video screen and programs that simulate riding through a park etc. She says it was incredible but doesn’t know the make. Are you aware of any?

Hi Pip. There are some great bikes with screens that offer various pre programmed workouts. We recommend looking at the SOLE brand options as these are great low-impact options at great prices.

Look at the expresso brand of interactive exercise bikes. They are outstanding. I would like to know how the bikes mentioned in this article compare to expresso bikes.

I;m just looking for a comfortable recumbant bike that lets me surf the net while exercising. To me, measures of speed, intensity, length of time, etd are nice but secondary.

Hi Bill, Unfortunately we don't have any reviews on recumbent bikes with internet accessible screens. However, I would like to suggest a model like Diamondback 910SR Fitness Recumbent Bike, where you can attach your IPAD to a holder and surf there leisurely. Sorry!
