The flywheel in an exercise bike is what creates resistance. You can choose the level of resistance to increase your workout intensity.

Resistance Type

The type of resistance shows what kind of flywheel is being used (if any), and its weight if the manufacturer provides it.

Silent Magnetic

Type refers to the style of the ride: Recumbent bikes allow you to lay back, while Upright bikes are more like road bikes (lean forward).

Drive System

The bike's drive system is how your pedaling interacts with the rest of the bike (flywheel) to give you a good workout.

18 Lb. Effective Inertia-Enhanced Flywheel

It's important to choose an exercise bike that will last, and the material of the frame determines how durable the bike is.

Commercial-Grade Steel

The most important part for comfortability during your workout, the seat should be adjustable and have ample cushioning.

Adjustable, Oversized Seat with Lumbar Support

Pedals are the driving force for an exercise bike, and should be comfortable, adjustable, and easy to control without slipping.

Extra Wide Ergonomic Foot Pedals with Straps

Bike Programs allow you to complete a workout with changing speeds and inclines, without changing anything manually.

Heart Rate

Heart Rate programs allow you to track how many times your heart is beating per minute (bpm), and some control the workout for you.

Grip Pulse EKG Heart Rate Monitor

Display refers to the screen you'll look at to monitor workouts. LED and LCD displays are similar to TV screens.

5" Backlit Display
Max. Weight

Max. User Weight is the amount of weight, in pounds (lbs), that the bike can safely support, which can represent durability.

350 lbs

Dimensions are included to help you figure out if this treadmill will fit properly (Length x Width x Height and Height x Depth).

52" x 22.25" x 58.9"
Accessory Tray

Some bikes include an accessory tray for holding items such as water bottles, wallets, keys, or MP3 players like iPods.

Cooling Fans

Some exercise bikes can fold up and/or have wheels that make it easy to roll them around for convenience and to save space.

The warranty is a very important part of your investment. The longer the warranty, the longer you can get free/discounted repairs by the manufacturer.

Our Rating

Rating: 85.4/100.  The ProForm 440 ES appeals to shoppers seeking low-strain weight loss, cardio exercise and lower-body muscle toning. ProForm has packed plenty of goodness into this $599 recumbent bike: comfortable seating with back support, 32 workouts, iFit compatibility, a tablet computer holder and more. But of course, no exercise bike is the best for everyone. Here are pros and cons to consider about choosing the ProForm 440 ES.

  • High capacity (350 pound user weight limit)
  • Step Thru design (Easily get on/off the bike)
  • Padded chair-like seat with ventilated back support
  • 18-pound drive (Good for lighter workouts)
  • Quiet magnetic resistance
  • 32 built-in workout programs
  • iFit compatible for unlimited workout choices and advanced data tracking
  • iPod-compatible (Charging port and 2″ speakers)
  • Grip pulse sensors on handlebars
  • Includes adaptor (Use a cord or batteries for the monitor)
  • Workout fan
  • Water bottle holder
  • Low price (Sale price $599, full price $799)
  • Two-year parts warranty

  • Assembly takes about two hours
  • For intermediate and advanced training a bigger drive is needed
  • Does not support wireless heart rate monitoring
  • iFit monitor sold separately
  • ProForm’s customer service frequently gets negative customer reviews

If you’d prefer a recumbent bike with iFit monitor included, consider the ProForm 740 ES Commercial instead. It costs $799, but that’s only about $100 more than the bike in this review after the addition of an iFit monitor.

The ProForm 440 ES is a popular tool for getting pain-free exercise at home. For just $599 it can help you lose weight, tone your legs and keep your heart healthy — all while respecting your sensitive spine and joints. This recumbent exercise bike stands out from the pack with its plentiful programming. It includes nearly three dozen training programs, plus it’s iFit-compatible for literally unlimited workout variety. Comfortable seating, a cooling fan and support for digital entertainment contribute to this bike’s overall appeal.

ProForm 440 ES Workout Programs

Ride toward your fitness goals with help from 32 preset bike workouts. Each workout program on the ProForm 440 ES was designed by a certified personal trainer to focus on calorie burn, intensity or performance. They make exercise sessions efficient and goal-oriented by automatically changing the bike’s resistance. Altogether there are 25 resistance levels.

This recumbent bike is iFit-compatible too. When you add a full color iFit monitor, infinite workout possibilities become available. With an iFit membership you can download a new and customized workout every day. You can also virtually ride outdoors along any Google Maps™ route: The 440 ES will change its resistance and show an interactive Google Street View for an immersive experience! Also popular on iFit are high definition video workouts featuring world-class personal trainers. Beyond the workout variety, you’ll get other fitness aids such as a digital workout calendar, extensive data tracking and menu planning advice.

iFit memberships are sold separately from the ProForm 440 ES. Often a one-year subscription is included with the purchase of a $99 iFit monitor.

Recumbent Bike Features

Like most ProForm exercise bikes the 440 ES enhances workout time with special features. A simple but significant feature is the tablet computer holder. Watch an online movie, multitask, use social media and so forth to work out for longer and help sessions fly by.

If music motivates you, then you’ll also appreciate how the ProForm 440 ES exercise bike is iPod-compatible. It has a port that charges your MP3 player. Audio is streamed through a set of 2″ console speakers.

Also supporting your endurance is a two-speed workout fan.

For heart rate monitoring the 440 ES has grip sensors on its handlebars. While this is convenient, keep in mind that grip sensors aren’t “hospital accurate.” For the most accurate readout we’d use our own wireless monitor instead.

Warranty & Guarantee

The standard ProForm 440 ES warranty is generous for a $599 recumbent bike. It includes:

– Frame: Lifetime

– Parts: 2 Years

– Labor: 1 year

ProForm also provides a 30-day money back guarantee.

There’s lots to like about the ProForm 440 ES. With its comfortable design, potentially infinite workout choices, a tablet computer holder and other appealing specs, it’s a top competitor at just $599. However, with a relatively light drive it might disappoint trainees who carry lots of weight and/or seek more powerful workouts.
