This product has been discontinued

Quick Summary

The Precor EFX 5.21 is an entry-level cross-trainer from a manufacture that has a history of putting commercial-grade production over fancy new features.

The EFX 5.21 is also the cheapest elliptical Precor has to offer, yet at $1,599 is by far from being the most affordable and technically not even “budget-friendly”.

The Precor EFX 5.21 elliptical features 16 levels of resistance, reversible rotation pedals, CrossRamp technology and fixed handlebars.

As a result, you get a smooth and natural, low-impact workout despite being an “entry-level” trainer.

Our Rating

Rating: 69.5/100. Cross-trainer delivers natural, smooth, low-impact workout with fixed handlebars that focus on a lower-body workout. Elliptical is more compact in size than what Precor generally offers.

Pros:

  • Elliptical focuses on lower body workout
  • Low impact EFX Technology reduces stress on muscles
  • SmartRate heart rate technology is a nice addition
  • Welded steel frame and protected with powder coat finish
  • Three degrees of incline (though manually adjusted)
  • CrossRamp technology lets you target the muscles you want to workout

Cons:

  • Stride length is vague, not displayed in specs
  • Entry-level trainer still pricey for what you get
  • Trainer monitors heart rate but you’ll need to pay extra for polar chest strap

Introduction

Smooth and low-impact, the Precor EFX 5.21 is technically an “entry-level” elliptical despite costing $1,599 and featuring some technology traditionally not found in this market.

The elliptical is based on a lower-body workout which is provided thanks to fixed handlebars and CrossRamp technology.

It does not look like the traditional cross-trainer you’ll see from Precor as the price tag and size of the elliptical is smaller than what we normally see from the manufacture.

Workout Programs

The Precor EFX 5.21 elliptical provides eight preset workout programs.

The programs include: Cross Trainer, Fat Burner, Gluteals, Heart Rate, Hill Climb, Interval, Manual and Weight Loss.

For the price paid, the workout selection is adequate yet not overtly impressive. The elliptical is also not compatible with iFit Live.

The Precor EFX 5.21 will record your heart rate thanks to a built-in contact monitor. It is also compatible with Polar Chest Strap heart rate monitor though you’ll need to pay extra for that accessory.

Smart Rate instantly analyzes your heart rate when you enter your age and weight. As a result, the technology helps you stay in your fat burn, cardio, or peak target zone for a more efficient cardio and weight-loss workout.

Precor EFX 5.21 Elliptical Features

The Precor EFX 5.21 focuses on a lower-body workout different from other ellipticals.

16 levels of resistance provide a number of options and the Precor EFX 5.21 supports CrossRamp technology.

Fixed handlebars provide multiple hand placement positions for comfortable posture, allowing you to focus on the efficient use of larger lower-body muscles.

With CrossRamp you can alter the height of the elliptical path your foot travels. Industry insiders define it as “Variable Stride Geometry”, which allows you to focus on a specific muscle group or all major lower-body muscle groups.

The Precor EFX 5.21 LCD display shows you calories burned, distance traveled, strides per minutes and workout time.

Incline is manually adjustable at three positions: 15 degrees, 20 degrees and 25 degrees.

Precor’s patented, low-impact EFX motion is smooth and natural, providing a low rate of perceived exertion to make your workouts more comfortable. The motion allows your heels to remain in contact with foot pedals, reducing muscle and tendon stress.

The ramp is made of welded steel and covered with a black powder coat finish.

Lastly, the Precor EFX 5.21 features reversible pedal rotation for more workout variety and challenge.

Conclusion

Despite being an entry-level elliptical and lacking some basic features, the Precor EFX 5.21 offers some surprisingly great technology including fixed handlebars and CrossRamp.

Compare the Precor EFX 5.21 to other ellipticals $1,500 to $2,000.
